Creative and Festive Approaches to After-School Conversations

With the new school year underway, engaging kids in conversations about their back-to-school experiences is helpful in allowing them the space to process them and allowing you to understand how they're adjusting.

We know this is easier said than done, so here are some creative ways to talk about school throughout the fall season that may get your child sharing.

  • Pumpkin Chats: Set up a cozy area in the house with fall decorations like  pumpkins, hay, and corn to feel like a pumpkin patch. Start a routine of discussing school in this area while enjoying a seasonal pumpkin snack or dessert. The environment in which we choose to have important conversations can truly make a difference!

  • Gratitude Garland: Create a garland using yarn and pieces of colorful paper shaped like leaves. Each evening, ask your kiddo to write or draw something they are thankful for from their school day on a leaf to add to the garland. Making gratitude a regular practice has been shown to have positive effects on well-being!

  • Cider Sippers: Cultivate conversations over your favorite fall drinks like warm apple cider and hot cocoa. Dedicate some time after school to discuss different parts of their school day with cups in hand. You could kick start a convo by sharing something like, "As we sip our cider, tell me about something that made you smile today." This can create an open, warm atmosphere that can combat any resistance or defenses that may arise!

  • Scarecrow Scenarios: Build or decorate a scarecrow together with wood and fabric, adding personalized touches with other accessories and a unique name. Invite your child to approach the scarecrow with questions or imagine them as a peer, teacher, or coach to help them navigate certain scenarios happening at school. This can stimulate their imagination and provide a less stressful way to have tough conversations.

By trying out these approaches with your child, you can help make their transition a bit smoother and more enjoyable. The goal is to make these after-school conversations a natural part of your evening routine, ensuring they feel heard and supported, while keeping you in the loop.
