3 Tips for Building a Supportive Homework Routine at Home

Getting kiddos to do their homework can be a struggle for many parents. With so many distractions, like technology, extracurriculars, and low motivation at times, creating a homework routine that works is tough!

Yet, homework is an important part of the learning process that encourages reflection, practice, and problem-solving.

It not only supports children’s academic growth but also teaches them helpful life skills like self-control and time management. Here are some parenting tips for building an effective homework routine with your child.

  1. Create a Personalized Learning Space: Dedicate a quiet, comfortable area in your home to use for doing homework and studying. Minimize distractions by limiting devices (unless required for assignments) and discouraging noisy family activities in or near this space. Provide comfort and structure with a supportive chair, a clutter-free table, and easy access to school supplies. Collaborate with your child to personalize this space with pictures and organizers to make it more likely that they’ll want (and even enjoy) working in it.

  2. Set Homework Time and Breaks: Establish a regular time for homework in your child’s schedule so that they know it’s a part of each school day. Pick and experiment with a time that fits your child’s energy level and ability to focus in the afternoon or evening. Help break down their homework into manageable tasks with small breaks in between to stretch or snack. Co-create rewards for completing all homework tasks too, such as allowing them to do their favorite activity.

  3. Get Involved as Needed: Find a good balance between being hands-off and hands-on during homework time. Be available when your child needs help by asking questions and giving tips, while allowing them to take the lead and do the work. Encourage perseverance by reminding them that learning takes time and tackling problems with support is a part of the process. Check-in a few times throughout to ensure they are on track, but try to avoid hovering to give them space to complete their work without the pressure to perform.

You can foster a routine that sets your child up for continual success! For more tips on building self-control, time management, and healthy routines at home that support your child’s mental, emotional, and social well-being, try out the HeyKiddo App today!
