A Summer of Growth: How Music + Mindful Parenting Help Kids Thrive

Summer is full of possibilities: longer days, flexible routines, outdoor adventures, and more time together. But for parents and educators, summer can also bring big feelings, disrupted schedules, and the need for simple ways to keep kids engaged, regulated, and connected.

That’s why HeyKiddo and Kindermusik have teamed up to support children’s social, emotional, and mental wellbeing in creative, joyful, and easy-to-use ways.

Together, Kindermusik’s research-backed musical experiences and HeyKiddo’s personalized parenting support create a powerful combination for families and classrooms: helping children build confidence, emotional regulation, resilience, language, movement skills, and connection through everyday moments of music, play, and mindfulness.

Why Music and Mindful Parenting Belong Together

Children learn best through connection. Whether they are singing a silly song, moving their bodies, practicing a calming breath, or mirroring a trusted adult, they are building important skills that support lifelong growth.

Music naturally invites kids to listen, move, imitate, anticipate, regulate, and express themselves. Mindful parenting helps adults slow down, respond with intention, and create emotionally safe moments where kids can practice those same skills with support.

When paired together, music and mindful parenting can help:

  • Build emotional awareness and self-regulation
  • Strengthen listening and attention skills
  • Develop language and communication
  • Practice cooperation and turn-taking
  • Improve fine and gross motor skills
  • Build confidence through repetition and play
  • Create calming rituals and routines
  • Deepen parent-child connection

And the best part? These moments do not need to be complicated. Many of the most meaningful activities take just 3-10 minutes.

Meet the HeyKiddo x Kindermusik Summer Partnership

HeyKiddo and Kindermusik both believe that growth happens through connection. This summer partnership is designed to help families and educators turn everyday routines into opportunities for growth, connection, and fun.

5 Simple Summer Activities for Kids:

Looking for easy ways to bring music and mindfulness into your home, classroom, camp, or caregiving routine? Here are a few HeyKiddo x Kindermusik activities to try this summer.

1. 1, 2, 3 Breathe with Me 🫁

Talk with your child about a time you felt angry, sad, or scared. Use an example they can relate to, such as being told “no” or feeling disappointed. Then invite them to share a time they felt that way.

Practice breathing in through your nose to “smell a rose,” then breathing out through your mouth to “blow the candles out.” You can say: “When you feel emotions like anger or sadness, one thing you can do to feel better is breathe in through your nose to smell a rose, then breathe out through your mouth to blow the candles out.”

Adding music gives your child a rhythm to follow, making breathwork more concrete, memorable, and fun.

Mindful parenting connection: Instead of trying to immediately fix a feeling, this activity will help you model emotional awareness and give your kiddo a calming strategy they can return to again and again.

2. Look at Me 👀

Stand in front of a mirror with your child. Label your body parts together: head, shoulders, knees, toes, arms, belly, feet. Then act out simple motions like stomping feet, touching toes, and stretching arms.

This activity will allow your child to connect words to body awareness while strengthening motor skills and self-recognition.

Mindful parenting connection: Mirrors are a great way to help kids notice facial expressions and body signals. Try asking your child: “What does your face look like when you feel happy? What about when you’re frustrated?”

3. See How I’m Jumping ⛹️

Invite your kiddo to act like different animals: a jumping frog, rolling pig, swinging monkey, shaking otter, or climbing bear. After each animal movement, encourage them to stretch up high, stand still, then flop down to the floor.

This movement sequence gives them a chance to use energy, practice body control, and transition into stillness.

Mindful parenting connection: Big movement can help kids regulate. Pairing active play with a calming ending teaches your child that bodies can move from energetic to settled.

4. Bubbles and Waves 🫧

Have you and your child hold opposite ends of a towel or sheet. Move it gently up and down to make small waves, quickly to make choppy waves, and slowly upward and downward to make one giant wave.

This is a wonderful partner (and family) activity that supports coordination and cooperation.

Mindful parenting connection: Calm, purposeful movement can help children settle their bodies. Try slowing the waves down and breathing together as the fabric rises and falls with your child.

5. Oh, Watch the Stars

Dim the lights and invite your child to lie down comfortably with you. Shine a flashlight on the ceiling like stars in the sky. Move the light slowly like a shooting star while calming music plays.

This gentle activity is ideal before nap time, bedtime, or a quiet reset during a busy summer day.

Mindful parenting connection: Predictable calming rituals help kids feel safe. A simple “stars” routine for your family can become a cue that it is time to rest, breathe, and slow down.

How Parents and Educators Can Use These Activities

These activities can fit into many summer moments:

  • Before transitions
  • After outdoor play
  • During morning meetings or circle time
  • As a calming bedtime routine
  • During travel or vacation downtime
  • When children need a reset
  • As a connection moment after a challenging behavior
  • In camps, classrooms, childcare settings, or at home

For younger kids, keep activities short, repetitive, and playful. For older ones, invite them to lead, create new lyrics, make up movement patterns, or teach the activity to a sibling or friend.

Small Moments Build Big Skills

A five-minute song, a shared breath, a silly movement game, or a quiet nighttime activity may seem simple. But these moments help children practice essential life skills: listening, waiting, expressing feelings, calming their bodies, understanding themselves, and connecting with others.

That is the heart of our partnership: giving families and educators tools that are joyful, practical, and grounded in the way children naturally learn. This summer, music and mindful parenting can help turn ordinary moments into meaningful opportunities for growth.
